The questions from Scoring Tricks and Penalties are shown with answers and a short explanation.
1. A partnership bids and makes 3 ♦. How many game points are earned?
| 60 | 90 | 100 | 120 |
The partnership would earn 60 game points.
2. How many tricks can you lose and still make a contract of 4 ♥?
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
A 4 ♥ contract needs 6 tricks plus 4 tricks or 10 tricks, so you can lose 3 tricks and still make your contract.
3. You have just made a 1 ♠ contract. What is the smallest ♣ contract that will win you a game?
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
A 1 ♠ contract gives you 30 points or 70 points needed for game. At 20 points per trick, you would need a 4 ♣ contract to make enough points for game.
4. You are vulnerable and you go down 1 trick on a 2 ♥ bid. What score is awarded to the opposing team?
| 50 | 80 | 100 | 200 |
Down 1 trick is normally 50 points, but down 1 trick when you are vulnerable gives the opposing team 100 points, so the answer is 100.
