Answer the following questions related to the partnership above using Stayman responses.
1. What does South open and why?
| 1 ♣ | 1 ♦ | 1 NT | 2 NT |
South has 15 HCP and a balanced hand containing no voids, no singletons and no doubletons. with 15 HCP, the hand is in the range of 15-17 HCP, so bid 1 No Trump.
2. How will North respond and why?
| 2 ♣ | 2 ♦ | 2 NT | 3 NT |
North has 12 HCP and 14 points. With no 5-card suit and a 4-card ♥ suit, North should bid 2 ♣, Stayman.
3. How should South respond to North and why?
| 2 ♦ | 2 ♥ | 2 NT | 3 NT |
South doesn’t have support for either major suit. With only 15 HCP, South should not bid game, so South shows his nonsupport of major suits by bidding 2 NT.
4. How does North respond to South’s bid and why?
| Pass | 3 ♣ | 3 ♦ | 3 NT |
South can’t support ♥, so a No Trump bid is appropriate. With 12 HCP, North has enough points to make a game bid, but not enough points to consider a slam bid. North should bid 3 NT.

| Pass | 4 ♥ | 4 ♠ | 4 NT |
South has 4 ♠. South knows that North must have 4 ♠, because of the Stayman response. South also knows that North has more than 10 HCP. Therefore, South can bid 4 ♠, which is a safer bid than 3 NT.
