1. What is North’s opening bid?

North has 10 HCP and 4 distribution points for a total of 14 points and 2 5-card suits. With a minimum opening hand of 12-14 points, a major suit is preferred, so bid the major suit, bid 1 ♥.
2. What is South’s combined range?

South has 7 HCP and 1 distribution point for a total of 8 points. North’s bid shows a range or 12-21 points, so an additional 8 points results in a combined range of 20-29 points.
3. What is South’s response to North’s opening bid?

South’s hand is in the 6-9-point range, so a weak response is needed. South’s hand has the point range for 1 NT, but South can bid 1 ♠, so South should make the 1 ♠ bid.
