The Measles Problem

Measles is still a dangerous disease around the world, but it was declared eliminated in the US in 2000 after almost 30 years usage of the combination MMR vaccine that protects against Measles, Mumps, and Rubella.  From 2000 until 2024 a typical year had an average of 178 cases per year and 0-1 deaths.  In fact, a total of only 3 measles deaths occurred during the 25-year period.

If we fast forward to 2026, things are very different.   Robert F Kennedy Jr., Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services has publicly advocated for replacing the MMR vaccine with the old-style single-disease vaccines, even though the MMR vaccine has achieved 95% herd immunity and has successfully controlled these common diseases for decades.

RFK Jr. claims the MMR vaccine messes with a child’s auto-immune system and parents should have more choices.   Medical experts reject RFK Jr.’s claims stating that the 3 vaccines represent a very small impact on a child’s immune system when compared to all the naturally occurring antigens a child touches every day.  The experts also point out that requiring more shots and more visits to the doctor increases the chance that children won’t be vaccinated.

The MMR recommendation is still in effect, because the single-dose vaccines are out of production, and it will take at least a year before they are available.  Nevertheless, enough parents took RFK Jr.’s warning seriously and did not get their kids vaccinated resulting in the loss of 95% herd immunity.

With the loss of herd immunity, measles is making a comeback.   This year there are 3471 confirmed cases and 4 confirmed deaths as this is written, though the CDC reports no measles fatalities.  There is a dispute over the cause of death.   The people who died had other medical problems, and they all contracted measles.  Even if the deaths were caused by other factors, it is safe to say that the victims most probably would not have died if they did not contract measles.

What must be done to restore the confidence in the MMR vaccine and prevent these needless deaths?
