Answer the following questions related to the partnership above using Stayman responses.

1. What does South open and why?

1 ♣1 1 NT2 NT

South has 15 HCP and a balanced hand containing no voids, no singletons and no doubletons. with 15 HCP, the hand is in the range of 15-17 HCP, so bid 1 No Trump.

 

2. How will North respond and why?

2 ♣2 2 NT3 NT

North has 12 HCP and 14 points. With no 5-card suit and a 4-card suit, North should bid 2 ♣, Stayman.

 

3. How should South respond to North and why?

2 2 2 NT3 NT

South doesn’t have support for either major suit. With only 15 HCP, South should not bid game, so South shows his nonsupport of major suits by bidding 2 NT.

 

4. How does North respond to South’s bid and why?

Pass3 ♣3 3 NT

South can’t support , so a No Trump bid is appropriate. With 12 HCP, North has enough points to make a game bid, but not enough points to consider a slam bid. North should bid 3 NT.

6. How will North respond and why?

North has 13 HCP and 15 points. With a 4-card ♠ suit, North should bid 2 ♣, Stayman.

 

7. How should South respond to North and why?

2 2 ♠2 NT3 NT

South has 4 and 4 ♠. South should go up the ladder and bid 2 . South needs to hear from North before deciding on a game bid.

 

8. How does North respond to South’s bid and why?

3 ♣2 ♠2 NT3 NT

North doesn’t have 4-card support in . With 13 HCP. North can make a game bid, so North should bid 3 NT.

 

9. How does South respond to North’s bid and why?

Pass4 4 ♠4 NT

South has 4 ♠. South knows that North must have 4 ♠, because of the Stayman response. South also knows that North has more than 10 HCP. Therefore, South can bid 4 ♠, which is a safer bid than 3 NT.
