The Political Donation Racket

The bribery charge against Senator Susan Collins seems pretty clear cut.  Former head of Navatek LLC Martin Kao pleaded guilty to fraud and also campaign finance violations.  He is currently incarcerated in a Federal Prison Camp.   Kao and others set up a shell company called the Society of Young Women Scientist and Engineers LLC that was used to pay out political donations used to foster government contracts.  The procedure is totally illegal.   One of the political donations was to a PAC connected to Collins.  In addition, the evidence includes emails between Kao and a member of Collins’ staff.  But Collins’ involvement misses the key story.

Illegal political donations seem to be very popular.  Martin Kao made donations to 7 other politicians, including Democrats and Republicans.  In addition, there are at least 5 known cases of illegal political donations meant to attract business from the government and to extract our tax dollars and enrich the donors.   Shell companies are often used to launder the donations and to maintain secrecy among the donors.

There are also some really big players in the money-for-influence game.  Major AI developers contributed at least $30 Million to Donald Trump PACs before Trump was elected President.  After taking office, Trump wrote an executive order rolling back AI controls implemented by the Biden administration.   The government contracts held by these AI firms make their donations very problematic.

Trump went one step further.  He dismantled an ongoing FBI section that investigated this kind of political corruption, cancelling all ongoing investigations.

These pay-for-play arrangements need to stop, and the first step is to limit the corruption in the Trump administration by securing a clear Democratic majority in November.
