Donald Trump’s war with Iran has exposed the best and most immediate reason to expand renewable energy, and it is more important than global warming. Ever since Trump’s War started on February 28 and the Strait of Hormuz was closed to shipping and 20% of the world’s oil was unavailable, the price of gasoline in the US shot up 40% to $4.18.
The world will experience much more than high gasoline prices. Because the oil is essential to world-wide productivity, a continued oil shortage will stagnate the economy and, at the same time, drive up prices much like the stagflation of the 1970’s. Because fertilizer is made from oil in the middle east and is transported to the markets through the strait of Hormuz, there could be wide-spread food shortages and increased levels of hunger and starvation.
In spite of Trump’s new blockade, ships are moving through the Strait of Hormuz, though the level of traffic is being suppressed by the new Trump blockade. Because the specific reasons for this war are unclear and neither side is ready to concede, a quick resolution is unrealistic, but there will be a point when the hostilities will wind down and we return to a new normal.
How does Trump’s war relate to global warming? It is about the cause of global warming, which is a growing world-wide dependence on fossil fuels. There is a finite supply of coal and oil, and finding new sources is becoming more difficult. There will be a time when the oil producers start cutting the oil supply by 20% to start. The disruption of the world stability by closing just 4 miles of shipping lanes in one small part of the entire world is a glimpse into our future if we don’t break the energy monopoly created by oil, and there will be no foreseeable end. If we want to fix the global warming problem, we will need to first address the oil monopoly.
The oil monopoly can be broken by simply developing alternate forms of energy such as solar, wind, water power and nuclear energy. We need them all. That is the real message of Trump’s war.
